Online Poker

Poker is an age old card game which few of us have probably played in our lifetime. Those that have know it is a game which can require skill, practice and patience, especially if you want to win the pot at the end. Online Poker has given us all the opportunity to try our hand at the game be it for fun or for real money. But playing online is not without its risks and if playing for the first time, there are a few things you should consider first.

There are literally thousands of online poker websites for you to choose from. Some are bigger than others, some are part of a larger casino style website, and some form part of betting websites. Choosing one can be a game of trial and error in itself, but you should satisfy yourself that any online poker room you choose is operating legally (there are many that aren’t). Choosing a room to play in can really be a matter of finding a site you are comfortable with, is easy to navigate and to sign up with.

As you begin searching for a poker site you will notice that most will offer some sort of incentive to get you to sign up. This could be in the form a cash bonus for joining, free plays, or as is most common, a deposit match where the site will match your first deposit amount, thus giving you double the amount to play with. Sounds great, but there are usually strings attached, often you may have to play all of the ‘free’ money before you can claim any of your winnings, so if you win big on your first go, you may not be able to withdraw it. Make sure you read all the terms and conditions attached to incentive offers before signing up.

One of the great benefits to playing online poker is the ability to play anytime and anywhere. There will always be a room available when you want to play and you get the added bonus of being able to play from the comfort of your own home, no added travel expenses! And unlike traditional poker games in casinos, you will have the options of playing for free, with very low minimum stake levels or play with the big boys for bigger stakes. If you are a beginner I would avoid choosing the last option and instead familiarize yourself with the game first by playing for free. As you begin to build your skill level you can progress on to playing for money.

As the saying goes ‘a fool and his money are soon parted’ so knowing when to quit is one of the key elements to enjoying online poker games. Set your limit and stick to it, even if you think you have a winning hand, it is impossible to know what you opponents have till they play. Quit while your ahead and come back another time.
